Sottsass, a half-brother to American Champion Turf Female Sistercharlie and a full-brother to Japan Cup second-place finisher Shin Emperor, secured his first Group 1 victory in the Prix du Jockey Club by two lengths from French 2000 Guineas winner Persian King, while setting a course record time of 2:02.90 over 2100 meters at Chantilly previously held by dual Arc winner Treve. At 4, he showed his class and versatility to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the mud, defeating Group 1 winners such as In Swoop, Persian King, Enable, Stradivarius, and Deirdre. He also captured the Group 1 Prix Ganay in the same year.
