Stay Gold became the first Grade or Group 1 winner overseas as a Japanese-bred and Japanese-based horse by winning the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase over subsequent Group 1 winner Ekraar. He also won the Group 2 Dubai Sheema Classic, defeating eventual European Horse of the Year Fantastic Light.
Stay Gold entered stud in Japan in 2002. Among his best progeny are Japanese Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Orfevre, Arima Kinen (Grand Prix) winners Gold Ship and Dream Journey, Takarazuka Kinen winner Nakayama Festa, Yasuda Kinen and Mile Championship winner Indy Champ, and Hong Kong Cup and Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Win Bright.
He died in 2015 at the age of 21.
