American Pharoah made history as the first American Triple Crown winner in 37 years, powering home in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby by a length, the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes by seven lengths, and the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes by 5 1/2 lengths. In his final start, he achieved the "Grand Slam" of American horse racing by winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic by 6 1/2 lengths at Keeneland in a track-record time of 2:00.07. He also captured the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at 2 as well as the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes at 3.
