Contrail was born in 2017. He is by Deep Impact out of Rhodochrosite by Unbridled's Song.
Contrail was awarded Best Two-Year-Old Colt in Japan in 2019, Best Three-Year-Old Colt in Japan in 2020, and Best Older Horse in Japan in 2021.
Contrail, one of the very best sons of Japanese super sire Deep Impact, was unbeaten in three starts at 2 including the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and the Grade 3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes in which he set a Japanese 2yo record time of 1:44.5 over 1800 meters on turf. He then went on to win the Grade 1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), his first race as a 3-year-old, the Grade 1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), the Grade 2 Kobe Shimbun Hai, and the Grade 1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) to become the third undefeated Japanese Triple Crown winner following Symboli Rudolf and Deep Impact. He also won the Grade 1 Japan Cup by two lengths at 4.
Contrail entered stud in Japan in 2022. His first crop hit the track in 2025. He has sired some good winners, including Badrinath, who won the Listed Hagi Stakes; Gene King, who finished 2nd in the Grade 3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes; and Going to Sky, who finished 3rd in the Grade 3 Kyoto Nisai Stakes.
Contrail was inducted into the Japan Racing Association Racing Hall of Fame in 2024.
Contrail was crowned Japanese Champion Freshman Sire in 2025.
