California Chrome was born in 2011. He is by Lucky Pulpit out of Love the Chase by Not For Love.
California Chrome was awarded Horse of the Year in the U.S.A. in 2014 and 2016, Champion Three-Year-Old Colt in the U.S.A. in 2014, and Champion Older Horse in 2016.
California Chrome won the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on dirt, and later in the season took the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on turf. He also captured the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes, and the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at 5. In the Pacific Classic Stakes, he defeated four-time Eclipse Awards winner Beholder by five lengths.
California Chrome entered stud in the U.S.A. in 2017. He moved to Japan for the 2020 season.
In 2024, Kabirkhan captured the Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge.
