California Chrome was awarded Horse of the Year in the U.S.A. in 2014 and 2016.
California Chrome won the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on dirt, and later in the season took the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on turf. He also captured the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes, and the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at 5. In the Pacific Classic Stakes, he defeated four-time Eclipse Awards winner Beholder by five lengths.
California Chrome entered stud in the U.S.A. in 2017. He moved to Japan for the 2020 season.
Among his best progeny are Chromium, who won the Group 1 Dos Mil Guineas in Chile; Cilla, who won the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes and finished 3rd in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes; and California Angel, who won the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes.
